Chapter 16

“What did Noah see?” Sage asked. He whispered the words against Lavender’s shoulder as they watched the last traces of the sunset. It was only 9:00 p.m. but the house was already quiet. The innkeeper and his guests were exhausted from the heat and the events of the afternoon so everyone decided to turn in after a delightful dinner.

“Everything,” Lavender replied.

“He said you could be the one to catch The Wrangler.”

“That’s not all he said,” Lavender murmured. He expected Sage to pull away but his arm tightened around Lavender.

“I know you aren’t a monster,” Sage said. Lavender wasn’t so sure but he pressed his hand over Sage’s and pretended he was the man his husband hoped for.

“What if I could be and found myself face-to-face with The Wrangler?” Lavender asked and turned in Sage’s arms. If Noah was right and Lavender did find himself in the position to stop that evil, what would Sage want him to do? Sage’s brows pulled together and he was distant as his hand spread and dragged down Lavender’s chest. They were still damp from a long, cool shower but Lavender’s skin was hot again.

“I trust your judgment and I know you want to help Aiden and Paul. And everyone we’ve met here. You always do what’s best for the people you love and I know you’re good in here,” he said and patted between Lavender’s pecs. “You’re a good—” His voice broke and he had to pull in a shuddering breath. “You’re a good man and I know you’d never hurt anyone innocent or vulnerable,” he said and Lavender nodded.

“Never,” he promised and gathered Sage in his arms. “I just want to know that you’ll forgive me if my instincts are right about The Wrangler. I don’t care about anything else as long as I know that you’ll forgive me.”

“He’s murdering school teachers and shopkeepers and tour guides! Please stop him if there’s any way you can!” Sage whispered. Lavender shut his eyes and let the words sink into his psyche, dousing any lingering doubt and anything that could have swelled into guilt with just enough oxygen. “I’ve spent a lot of time with Hadley while you all have been out working. He’s a really good guy and this is eating him alive!” Sage continued and Lavender hummed and nodded, making all the right sounds. Lavender saw the strain the murders and the investigation had taken on Hadley and knew that there was only one way to truly end this nightmare for him. “You know, he tried to give a few of his rooms to some guys in town who were unhoused but they turned him down because of the ghosts! Hadley just doesn’t have it in him to see people suffering and his heart’s too tender to handle this kind of thing.”

“He has a strong support system. His friends will help him recover and carry on after this is over,” Lavender predicted. He jumped when he heard the sound of a door being kicked open down the hall and they both spun.
